High School Trustees Ban Gang Symbolism

In an effort to crack down on gang activity, Anaheim Union High School District trustees have voted to ban gang-related attire and behavior.

The policy covers gang hand gestures, stare-downs, gang nicknames, gang tattoos, graffiti and clothing.

In February, board President Harald Martin asked fellow trustees to set a policy excluding known gang members from district campuses.

The proposal was set aside after the staff reported that students could not legally be expelled for affiliation only.

Another aim of the policy is to inform parents of potential gang problems, said Craig Haugen, assistant superintendent of administration.
