Year-Round School

Carlos Jimenez (Commentary, March 19) makes a good case on the problems of year-round, multitrack schools. The interesting point I find is the reference to the two magnet schools. They are small, nontraditional and apparently less expensive to build than regular high schools. I feel that this is where the debate in school overcrowding needs to take place. Can smaller schools be educationally and fiscally advantageous for the public?

I do not necessarily agree that the system is “separate and unequal.” Overcrowding has contaminated most schools. Maybe it is logistics, not race. There are probably better options than what the school systems are using. It is up to the public and officials to address these issues. Let the debate begin!
