City Trying to Get Rid of Unneeded Building
For sale: a 1,500-square-foot office building owned by the city. The price is right, payment terms generous--free.
Unable to sell the former real estate office, the city is looking to give the building away to someone willing to pay the moving costs.
Donated by a developer in 1995, the 30-year-old building cost the city about $13,000 to move from its location at Ritz Carlton Drive and Pacific Coast Highway. The building, intended to be converted into a temporary senior center, was put on blocks at Creekside Park.
But a City Council majority recently limited plans for developing the park, leaving no use for the building.
“It seemed like a good idea at the time, but it’s turned out to be pretty hard to give up something that was free to begin with,” public works director Mort August said. “What was once an asset turned into a liability.”
The city got a few calls, but nobody turned in a bid to buy the building. Recently, the council authorized August for collection of bids to tear it down.
“That doesn’t mean we want to demolish it,” August said. “The council wants to see it put to some use.”
