Joe Friezer; Dutch Royal Photographer Ran L.A. Studio

Joe Friezer, 79, who was photographer to the Dutch royal family and later became known as “One Shot Joe.” Born in Dordrecht, Netherlands, Friezer established himself as a professional photographer in his youth. He started working for the royal family after covering the wedding of then-Princess Juliana of Holland and Prince Bernhard of Germany, and accompanied Juliana on her diplomatic trips abroad after she became queen of the Netherlands. During World War II, Friezer worked with the Dutch resistance and published an underground newspaper, which earned him a medal from the Dutch government in 1983. Friezer abandoned his work for Juliana and moved to Los Angeles in 1955, eventually establishing Joe Friezer Photography. The business is now run by his son, Henk Friezer. Joe Friezer’s trademark became making a single photograph accomplish his assignment--earning the nickname “One Shot Joe.” Over the years, he photographed the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., Walt Disney and several U.S. presidents. He earned repeated awards from World Press Photo, the Greater Los Angeles Press Club and the California Press Photographers Assn.
