THE WASHINGTON POST

Cardiovascular diseases are a leading cause of death among women older than 25, according to the American Heart Assn.

Nevertheless, a recent AHA poll suggested that only 8% of women believe that heart disease and stroke pose the greatest risk to their health.

In an effort to heighten awareness of the dangers these diseases present, the AHA has produced a brochure that defines a woman’s risk profile as well as what risk factors for stroke can be treated or changed.

Eating-Disorder Testings Are Anonymous and Free

Eating disorders affect more than 5 million Americans, the majority of whom are women, according to figures from the National Institute of Mental Health.

Eating disorders are illnesses such as anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa that are associated with severe body-image distortion and an obsession with weight. Victims of these disorders can develop heart problems, osteoporosis and reproductive difficulties.

The National Eating Disorders Screening Program is offering free and anonymous screenings as well as information for people who have one of these illnesses.

Most Insurers Can’t Deny Pregnancy-Related Care

Under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, most insurers cannot deny pregnancy-related care if a woman is pregnant when she enrolls in a new plan, deny coverage to newborn or newly adopted children with medical problems, or use genetic information as a basis to deny coverage.
