Group Says Film Demeans Women; Boycott Urged

Share

Project Islamic HOPE, a community organization, has called for a boycott of Ice Cube’s new comedy “The Player’s Club,” saying the film is “demeaning and an embarrassment to African Americans.”

“This slapstick buffoonery is so shameful, offensive and disrespectful to women you miss whatever comedic value the movie is supposed to have,” the group’s founder, Najee Ali, said at a news conference outside the Magic Johnson Theatres.

A teenager sitting nearby said he was going to see the movie when it opens today and didn’t understand what all the fuss is about.

“It’s just a movie,” said Aaron Masters, 16, of Inglewood. “It’s going to be funny. You can’t take everything so seriously.”

Eufala Garrett, director of marketing for Magic Johnson Theatres, said the company has no comment on the boycott. Ice Cube, who co-produced, wrote, directed and stars in the film, was not available for comment.
