Kennel Club Hosting Dog Shows at CSUN

More than 2,000 purebred dogs from all over the Western states will participate in two dog shows at Cal State Northridge this weekend.

The dogs will vie for best in breed, best in group and best in show awards at shows sponsored by the Simi Valley Kennel Club on Saturday and Sunday.

Other categories include best in puppy and best junior handler ages 6 to 16, said Bobbi Davis, show chairman of the Simi Valley affiliate of the American Kennel Club.

“We have participants from Nevada, Arizona, Oregon and Washington, as well as those residing in California, including 400 from the San Fernando Valley,” Davis said.

On both days, best in breed winners will be competing in one of seven best in group categories--sporting dogs (including retrievers and Labradors), hounds (basset hounds and dachshunds), herding dogs (German shepherds and collies), toy dogs, nonsporting dogs (bulldogs and Dalmatians), working dogs (Siberian huskies and Great Danes) and terriers.

The seven winners in best in breed will then compete in the best in show category, where the dogs will be judged against a standard, she said.

The shows, which are open and free to the public, will take place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day in the lawn area at Lot C, located on the east side of the CSUN campus on Zelzah Avenue between Prairie and Plummer streets. There will be a $3 parking fee.
