POW / MIA Flag Will Be Flown Outside City Hall
Residents soon will see a new flag waving outside City Hall, recognizing prisoners of war and soldiers reported missing in action.
The Vietnam Veterans of Orange County is approaching cities countywide with their proposal to fly the flag year-round, spokesman Bob Kakuk said. Cities generally fly the POW/MIA flag below the American flag or on a separate pole nearby, he added.
Tustin on Monday became the 15th city to agree, Kakuk said. After the City Council voted unanimously, Kakuk’s group donated the flag, which is black and white with a man’s silhouette.
“It’s our objective to get as many flags out there as possible,” said Kakuk, a veteran of the Vietnam War. “We’re trying to make Orange County a leader in the nation by flying as many POW flags as we can.”
Kakuk said he will be asking Placentia and Anaheim this week to join the growing list.
He said his group’s objective is to honor those who were lost or abandoned and spread information about POWs.
“They are our own people, and we owe it to them to show that we care,” he said. “And hopefully, people who see the flags and don’t know about the issue will start asking questions.”
