Project Targets Saving Rain Forest Wetlands
To celebrate Earth Day students at Marian Bergeson Elementary School are saving pennies to buy land in Pantanal, Brazil--the world’s largest freshwater wetlands system in a rain forest.
The second annual Pennies for the Rainforest campaign, organized by teacher Barbara Hamm, will run through today.
The price for an acre of rain forest land is $35.
The Nature Conservancy, based in Arlington, Va., encourages students across the country to take part in the annual event to save the rain forests from further destruction, Principal Helene M. Dykes said.
At Bergeson Elementary, students gathered $1,200 last year and bought 34 acres, she said.
On Earth Day, April 21, there will be school-wide activities including studies on greenhouse gases and acid rain.
