A Thousand Oaks man was beaten over the head with a crowbar after he used pepper spray on a burglar who was roaming through his home, authorities said Friday.

The 23-year-old victim suffered a 2-inch gash and was treated at Los Robles Regional Medical Center and released, Senior Deputy Anthony Marr said.

The break-in occurred about 12:10 p.m. at the house in the 200 block of Cedar Heights, Sgt. Mark Ritchie said.

The burglar, described as about 30, 5 feet 9, 140 pounds and having a medium to dark complexion, pried his way into the house and was surprised to find the owner, Marr said.

The burglar was also unshaven, had short curly hair and was wearing a black crew-neck sweater, Ritchie said. The man didn’t steal anything and fled in a dark blue 1978 Toyota Corolla, Ritchie said.

Marr said he was not aware of any similar break-ins in the area.
