Man Gets 22 Years for Sexual Assaults

A 69-year-old former Air Force officer received a 22-year prison sentence last week for sexually assaulting two Orange County women he had dated.

The women appeared in court to urge a lengthy sentence for Dick Tilman Hunt of Long Beach. The women, ages 49 and 55 at the time of the assaults, had testified they were drugged by Hunt before he raped them.

“I am here because I want to do everything I can to make sure Mr. Hunt is never out in public again,” one of the victims told Superior Court Judge Richard F. Toohey. “I have seen no apology from Mr. Hunt. I think he might do it again if he ever gets out.”

A jury in February found Hunt guilty of six counts of rape, sodomy and unlawful penetration with a foreign object.

Hunt’s attorney, John Barnett, argued during the trial that the gray-haired widower thought he had consent from the women to have sex with them. On Friday, Barnett asked that Hunt be given a light sentence, calling the charges “isolated incidents in an otherwise blameless life.”

The judge said he felt justified in handing down the 22-year sentence, saying Hunt committed “callous, reprehensible crimes” and has never shown remorse.
