Hearing to Discuss Storing Rainwater
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works will hold a public hearing today to review plans to collect water around Hansen Dam.
The plan calls for the collection of rainwater in areas around the dam that have been used as horse trails and soccer fields.
“Some of the residents are concerned about what the water will do to the fields and to the area as a whole,” said Phyllis Hines, land-use chairwoman of the Lake View Terrace Improvement Assn.
The water will be collected from September to early spring to restore water to local aquifers. It takes five years for surface water to trickle all the way down to aquifers underground, officials said.
The plan is an effort to increase water resources to prepare for the Valley’s growing population, U.S. Army Corps spokesman Herb Nesmith said.
“Instead of releasing water downstream into the L.A. River, it might be better for all concerned to find a way to keep some of that water,” he said.
Today’s hearing will be from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Lake View Terrace Recreation Center, 11075 Foothill Blvd.
