College Scholarship Deadline Extended

Valley College has extended a scholarship application deadline after receiving only 17 applications for 25 available scholarships.

Each year the college awards $1,000 Herbert Hafif Foundation Scholarships to 25 high school students who will attend Valley College. Normally, the school receives as many as 100 applications, said Dennis Reed, dean of foundation and community relations at the campus.

The college has pushed back its April deadline to May 29, in hopes that high school students will take advantage of the extra month and a half.

Reed said the decrease in response may actually be linked to an increase in availability. For the first time, the college has offered the scholarship to all Valley high schools. In the past, the scholarships were available at only 10 high schools, and guidance counselors would pick up the applications and deliver the completed ones.

The increased availability forced college officials to rely less on school guidance counselors and more on the students.

Any high school senior who plans to attend Valley College may apply. The main criterion is financial need, Reed said.
