A letter carrier fatally shot a post office clerk Friday after they argued in a break room, authorities said.

The 27-year-old suspect ran from the building and sped off in a car after the shooting as several post office employees prepared for lunch, witnesses said.

Dallas police Sgt. Jim Chandler said officers arrested Maceo Yarbough III in southwest Dallas shortly after the shooting. Chandler said Yarbough is the only suspect at this time.

The 34-year-old clerk, Lavinia Kelley-Shaw, had worked for the Postal Service for 15 years. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Another worker was slightly injured while trying to escape from the break room, Postal Inspector Linda Kirksey said.

Several other people also fled the post office after shots were fired, said Marc Martinez, manager of a car wash across the street.

A helicopter hovered overhead after the shooting as worried relatives of workers arrived and a crowd gathered at a nearby restaurant.

The letter carrier, a full-time temporary employee, had been on the job about a year.
