New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani has made another pitch for new stadiums for the New York Yankees and New York Mets.

City officials have spent several months discussing finances with the Yankees, the mayor said. He’d like to build a new stadium in the Bronx, the home of the fabled Yankee Stadium, he added.

Another possible site for the proposed baseball-only arena is a 25-acre plot near the Long Island Rail Road yards on 11th Avenue in midtown Manhattan. It would be easier to finance a stadium there than in some parts of the outer boroughs, the mayor said.

There would be no new city taxes to help pay for the stadium, and New Yorkers are in for a real surprise when the mayor reveals the fruits of his financial planning, he said. He would not give further details.

Proposed for the Mets is a multipurpose complex in a parking lot next to Shea Stadium in the Flushing section of Queens.

Mets owner Fred Wilpon said the complex would play host to basketball, hockey, and other events, the Daily News reported.

The Yankees’ lease with the city expires in 2002, the Mets’ in 2004.
