Board OKs Bleachers for School

Seniors at Ocean View High School may be able to graduate on campus for the first time in 1999, after the school board this week voted to buy bleachers to seat 1,000.

Trustees of the Huntington Beach Union High School District approved the stadium-like seating at a cost of $3,000.

Students and teachers have complained for years that the school lacks bleachers to host home sports events and graduation ceremonies.

“This board owes the community this facility,” Trustee Bonnie Bruce said.

But board President Barbara Johnson questioned the cost of the bleachers.

For the last two meetings, students, parents and teachers have been lobbying for the bleachers.

School officials said the bleachers should be completed within 18 months.
