Builder Gets OK to Proceed With Plans

The City Council has agreed to allow a developer to move ahead with plans for a large residential neighborhood near the Metrolink station at Los Angeles Avenue and Stearns Street.

After a meeting Monday to discuss the proposed project, however, the council directed developer Gary Gorian to look into scaling back the project and improving emergency access and landscaping.

“He’s got a very awkward plan and a lot of questions to answer,” Mayor Greg Stratton said. “Personally, I’d like to see something less dense and less intense.”

Gorian has proposed building 494 apartments and 246 homes on a 258-acre parcel running south of the railroad tracks and the Arroyo Simi.

He is asking the city to amend its General Plan to allow him to develop the land, which is now zoned for mobile homes.

He is also asking that the city modify its hillside ordinance to allow him to locate the development on areas that are now protected from construction.

Gorian will spend the next several months redesigning the project before submitting those plans to the council for review and approval.
