Council Delays Action on Mother’s Day Cards
After the Los Angeles City Council on Tuesday postponed action for a day on a motion by Councilman Nate Holden making Mother’s Day a city-sponsored “special event,” Holden threatened his colleagues with retribution.
“I’m going to take away all officeholder accounts,” Holden said, smiling. “That will show ‘em.”
Holden is seeking to make Mother’s Day a special event so city ethics regulations will not prevent him from using his officeholder account to pay for printing and mailing Mother’s Day cards to 15,000 women voters in his district.
Last week, the commission said city rules prevent Holden from using the funds for that purpose, saying the money is intended to provide constituents with information about city-sponsored events or an official’s position on any matter before the council or the mayor. In hand-delivered letters to the council Monday, the commission requested that the council refer the matter back to them without taking a vote on Holden’s motion.
The council is expected to review the issue at its regular meeting today.
