Re “A University That Is Truly Self-Possessed,” Column Right, April 26: It is heartening to learn of Cal State Monterey Bay’s espousing of a depth-psychological perspective at the undergraduate level. This perspective values not only the diversity within the human psyche on the personal level, but the diversity among mankind.

An examination of history and current trends, based on acute sensitivity to cultural diversity as it manifests in the six listed fields, can only create an individual amply qualified to be a member of our global village. What an exciting prospect!

* Cal State Monterey Bay’s holistic approach to education, as described in George Will’s column, may seem anomalous, but I’m afraid it is symptomatic of a trend in public education nowadays in which actual teaching and learning are subordinated to a sense of feeling good about oneself.
