Park Offers Chance to View Lunar Eclipse

Share

Budding astronomers are invited to check out a partial lunar eclipse and munch some toasted marshmallows tonight at Malibu Creek State Park. Steve Killgore, a park docent, will explain the “geometry and history” of eclipses.

“Around the time the sun sets, the corner of the moon is going to be a little bit dimmed,” Killgore said. The event is not a major eclipse, but it is one of several due in the coming months.

People can bring their own binoculars to view the eclipse, and Killgore plans to make at least one telescope available.

The park is also hosting another astronomy night on Thursday, when the Perseid meteor shower will put on a natural fireworks show around midnight, Killgore said. People interested in attending should make campsite reservations.

The free event tonight, “Shadows on a Summer Night,” will run from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at the Campfire Center at Malibu Creek State Park. The park entrance is at 1925 Las Virgenes Road, and parking in the main lower lot is free. Signs will direct visitors to the Campfire Center.

To make a reservation for Thursday’s event, call (800) 444-PARK. Campsites cost $15 per night Sunday to Thursday, and $16 per night Friday and Saturday.
