Gun Control

Share

Recent letters to The Times criticizing Mary Leigh Blek and Ellen Freudenheim for demanding tough gun-control laws trot out the standard NRA line that “guns don’t kill people, people kill people.”

This tired slogan refuses to acknowledge that there is no other consumer product that comes close to matching the lethality of handguns. People with handguns kill, while people armed with less lethal weapons injure. That observation is not rocket science, merely common sense.

The more we do to restrict the availability of handguns, the more lives we will save.

Like most Americans, Mary Leigh Blek and Ellen Freudenheim simply want the same regulatory scrutiny that we apply to everyday products such as teddy bears and toasters to be applied to firearms. MICHAEL BEARD
