The University of Virginia took out full-page newspaper advertisements Friday apologizing for a baby switch at the school hospital.

The switch has “caused unspeakable sorrow to the families involved,” President John Casteen III wrote in the letter published in several newspapers.

“They owe us more than an apology . . . ,” said Brenda Rogers, step-grandmother of one of the girls, Rebecca Chittum, 3. She did not say what else the family wants from the hospital.

DNA tests revealed last month that Paula Johnson is not the biological mother of Callie Johnson, 3. Results of a DNA analysis of Rebecca’s blood are expected soon.

A blood test indicated Callie was likely switched with Rebecca at the University of Virginia Medical Center’s maternity ward, where the two girls were born in June 1995.

The parents of Kevin Chittum, 25, and Whitney Rogers, 19, have been taking care of Rebecca since the couple died in a car crash July 4.
