Paraguay’s Cubas Takes Office
Vowing to wage war on corruption, Paraguay’s new president, Raul Cubas Grau, was sworn in Saturday as the first elected civilian to succeed another in about 45 years.
Cubas, 54, succeeded President Juan Carlos Wasmosy, Paraguay’s first elected civilian president since the end of the 34-year military rule of Gen. Alfredo Stroessner in 1989.
Cubas declared he would wage a “frontal assault against poverty” and “attack crime in all its forms,” including trade piracy and drug trafficking. He vowed to insert Paraguay further into the global economy.
“My commitment is with God and with the people of Paraguay,” Cubas said, taking the red, white and blue sash of Paraguay upon his shoulders.
Cubas also named 11 ministers to make up his first Cabinet after taking office Saturday.
