New Leader Assailed for Freeing Prisoner
Paraguay’s minister of industry and business, who is also the president’s brother, resigned one day after the new head of state freed an ex-army chief convicted of leading a 1996 coup attempt. Raul Cubas’ first official act after taking office Saturday was to release former army Gen. Lino Oviedo, who some in the ruling Colorado Party feared would seek revenge against those who put him in prison. Oviedo was the Colorado Party’s original presidential nominee. Carlos Cubas resigned as minister of industry and business in protest, and some Colorado Party members were considering ways to impeach the president.
