What is it? A 1968 Grundig stereo with a high-gloss, walnut veneer chassis that cost $220 new.

What is its history?

Grundig, a company begun in 1945 in Germany, built radio sets and went on to be innovative in electronic equipment. In 1967, the first Grundig hi-fi receiver was introduced, and in 1968 the company created the first hi-fi amplifier in Europe with a built-in equalizer. This set still has excellent sound reproduction.

Why is it popular today?

“I bought this stereo because I thought it was the most classic thing I had ever seen,” said 22-year-old Changwen Fan of Huntington Beach. “I love things from the ‘40s, ‘50s and ‘60s, and I even collect the original records to play on it. Records aren’t hard to find, but it does take a lot of time of find the ones I want that aren’t scratched. I’m an engineer, so my collection is my creative outlet.”

Many stereo aficionados believe that the tubes in older receivers such as this actually give better sound reproduction than do today’s transistors.

Besides that, ‘60s decor is one of the most popular looks right now because of its clean lines and bright colors. Most things are still affordable and often built better than newer items.

What is it worth today?

“Today this would bring around $500,” said Holli Thomas, owner of Decor Delux, a vintage furnishings store in the Lab in Costa Mesa. “As with most things, the condition is very important, and this piece has been well kept up. It is really a piece of furniture as well as a stereo.”

Where can I find it?

Stores like Decor Delux have selected pieces. “They are hard to find in good condition,” Thomas said. “When I find one, it’s sold right away.” Garage sales and flea markets are other possibilities.

How can I find out more?

There are many books on ‘60s decor. Echoes, the magazine of “classic modern style & design,” is published quarterly.
