From Times Wire Reports

A man suspected in the slayings of a dozen men, many of them gays, was convicted of one of the killings. Jurors found Elton M. Jackson guilty of killing Andrew D. “Andre” Smith in 1996. The jury recommended life in prison. Authorities said Jackson had sex with Smith at his home in Portsmouth, Va., strangled him and dumped his body on a dirt road near Chesapeake. The body was discovered July 22, 1996. Jackson was charged only in Smith’s killing, but the FBI considered him a suspect in 11 other killings in the Hampton Roads area since 1987.
