Swiss Hero’s Actions Will Reverberate Across the Southland

Re “A Modern-Day Schindler Faces the Consequences” by Beverly Beyette (Aug. 19): The profile focuses on Swiss citizen Christoph Meili’s attempt, at great personal cost, to bring justice to Holocaust survivors. We regret the personal harassment that he and his family are undergoing.

The Jewish Federation Council of Greater Los Angeles has a direct interest in his efforts. A recent federation study cited a population of 14,000 Holocaust survivors in the greater Los Angeles area, some of whom are destitute. Many of these survivors are receiving help from the federation in filing applications before Nov. 17 in order to qualify for a new fund established by the Swiss banks for needy victims of the Holocaust.

Applications will be distributed worldwide. The Jewish Family Service of Greater Los Angeles ([310] 271-3306) and the federation’s Museum of the Holocaust ([213] 851-8202) are available to help local survivors with the benefits to which they are entitled under this program.
