Myanmar Activist Ill, Ends Protest
Opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi returned home in an ambulance Monday, ending a 13-day protest against the military government’s restrictions on her movements.
Suu Kyi’s political party, the National League for Democracy, had urged her to end her protest on a bridge outside Yangon, the capital, where her van had been stopped by authorities since Aug. 12.
Suu Kyi’s doctors said she was suffering from kidney and urinary tract problems, low blood pressure and dizziness Friday, when they last were allowed to see her. Government officials said she returned voluntarily to the capital Monday.
Earlier in Yangon, 200 students mounted the first anti-government protest since December 1996. It appeared to catch authorities by surprise and lasted an hour before riot police arrived.
