At Least 1,000 Rebel Suspects Are Seized
Congolese soldiers battled rebels who had slipped into the capital and hunted down suspected insurgents throughout Kinshasa, taking more than 1,000 prisoners. Across the city, some suspected rebel infiltrators were beaten or burned to death by mobs. About half the 8,000-strong rebel force on Congo’s southwestern front had been either captured or killed, Zimbabwe’s government said. In eastern Congo, the death toll in a weekend massacre at a Roman Catholic mission rose to 207 people, the Vatican missionary news service Fides reported.
