Annual Tepeyac Procession Sunday

Share

The story goes like this: on Dec. 9, 1531, an Indian named Juan Diego was on his way to the village of Tlateloco in Mexico to attend mass. Diego was on the hill of Tepeyac when the Virgin Mary appeared before him standing on the wings of an angel with the rays of the sun shining behind her.

To honor the sighting, the Hispanic Ministry of the Catholic Church’s Diocese of Orange will hold its ninth annual procession on Sunday in Santa Ana.

The procession, modeled on similar events that are popular in Mexico, has in the past attracted more than 1,500 spectators and proceeded even in pouring rain.

The 2 p.m. event, which includes music and Aztec and Mexican folk dancers, will begin at Broadway and Fourth Street in Santa Ana.
