Forecaster Predicts Busy Storm Season in Atlantic in ’99

MIAMI — While the Caribbean and Central America struggle to recover from one of the worst Atlantic hurricane seasons ever, a noted hurricane forecaster sounded a warning Friday that 1999 could be just as bad.
The Atlantic basin will see 14 tropical storms next year, nine of which will grow to hurricane strength, said Dr. Bill Gray, a Colorado State University researcher who has had some success predicting hurricane frequency and intensity.
Four of the hurricanes will be “intense,” with sustained winds of 111 mph or greater and a strong tidal surge capable of causing extensive damage, Gray said.
He also said the U.S. East Coast could be particularly vulnerable.
The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June through November.
