Final Council Vote Due on Moving Child-Care Program

Thousand Oaks City Council members are set to take a final vote tonight on plans to move a city-sponsored child-care program into a building at 110 Conejo School Road.

The program, which mostly serves children from low-income households, has been housed within the private Roots & Wings child-care center on Calle Tulipan since June 1996.

With the move, the city would be able to nearly double the number of youngsters served to 106.

“There’s just a real critical need for quality child care,” said Carol Williams, the city’s special projects and programs manager. “Many families have two working parents, or are single mothers that need to go back to work. Because of the changes in the welfare system, there’s a real emphasis to provide low-cost child care so that parents can go back to work.”

The new facility, to be called the Thousand Oaks Child Care Center, will feature full- and part-time care, with indoor and outside play areas, learning consoles, places for naps and quiet time, and cribs for infants. It is funded largely by a state grant.

Roots & Wings staff will continue to operate the program at the new location. The program expects to receive a $230,000 annual subsidy from the state.
