The Israeli army decided Wednesday to court-martial a soldier whose beating by a Palestinian mob shocked the nation and froze the peace process.

Cpl. Assaf Miara, 19, will be charged with not carrying a loaded weapon and leaving his base without permission.

However, the army will not bring charges against Miara for not firing his M-16 rifle on his attackers, who smashed the windows of the car he was in, dragged him out and struck him repeatedly in the head with chunks of concrete.

The attack took place last week on the outskirts of the West Bank city of Ramallah. In response, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu suspended the Israeli troop withdrawal in the West Bank.

The army said it will discipline Miara’s commanding officer, as well as two other officers who were at the site of the attack for not giving him proper instructions.
