Palo Alto-based Sun Microsystems Inc., inventor of the Java programming language, unveiled software designed to take on EMC Corp. of Massachusetts, the leader in the computer storage business. Sun’s new StoreX lets all types of computers get information from all kinds of data storage devices without having to write new software for them to communicate. StoreX is based on Java, a language used to write programs that can run on various types of computers.

San Jose-based 3Dfx Interactive Inc., a maker of graphics chips for computer games that had third-quarter revenue of $33.3 million, agreed to acquire STB Systems Inc. of Richardson, Texas, for about $141 million in stock to add video cards to its product line.

Los Angeles-based Bonded Motors Inc., a remanufacturer of car and light-truck engines, said it expects to take a fourth-quarter charge of $300,000 to cover expenses incurred while putting together a secondary stock offering, which has now been canceled.

Woodland Hills-based Litton Industries Inc., a leading aerospace and defense contractor, said it was awarded a $620-million contract to build two Aegis guided-missile destroyers for the Navy, bringing the number of Aegis ships ordered to 21. The work is part of an option in a 1997 contract won by Litton’s Ingalls shipbuilding unit.
