* Don’t place candles directly on furniture. The oils used to make them could damage the finish.

* Trim wicks to a quarter inch for best burning; a candle with a long wick can emit smoke and burn faster.

* Nail clippers are good for trimming deeply nestled wicks.

* Let wax drips harden before removing. To get them off candlesticks, melt wax with a blow dryer or freeze the holders and then peel the drips off.

* Using a candle snuffer to extinguish the flame prevents wax from splattering and also helps keep wicks centered. To clean wax from brass snuffers, freeze them for 20 minutes.

* Scented candles interfere with the natural aroma of food. Don’t use them at dinner.

* Char the wicks of any candles on display to avoid the “model home” look.

* Store candles in a cool, dry and dark place. Direct sunlight fades the colors.

* To make candles burn slower, try storing them in the refrigerator wrapped in foil or plastic wrap. Many candle burners say this works, although there is no scientific proof.
