Simi Valley police on Tuesday received a call from a man alerting them to a theft and claiming to know the whereabouts of the armed perpetrator.

Authorities believed the tip was reliable since the person offering it declared himself to be the suspect, authorities said.

“He made contact with us and indicated he was armed,” said Sgt. Anthony Anzolotti.

Police sent out a number of officers, including members of the SWAT team, who surrounded the house on Ophelia Court.

Neighbors were evacuated, streets were cordoned off for several blocks and traffic was diverted for about 30 minutes.

The man remained inside the house for a short time before laying down his shotgun and surrendering without incident, Anzolotti said.

Officers then searched the house for additional weapons or suspects, and found none, he said.

The suspect was taken to the Simi Valley police station for booking.

Police did not release his name nor the charges that would be filed against him.
