Menlo Beats Chapman in Overtime

Juan Lewis’ three-pointer late in regulation tied the score and Menlo took the opportunity to defeat Chapman in overtime, 77-70, in a nonconference men’s basketball game Saturday at Menlo.

Chapman (9-9) took a 38-29 halftime lead, but got into foul trouble early in the second half. Trailing by three with fewer than 10 seconds remaining, Lewis made his three-pointer.

Menlo (6-13) was 27 of 38 from the free-throw line.

Gil Gonzalez had 21 points for Chapman.

In Golden State Athletic Conference men’s basketball:

Southern California College 86, Point Loma Nazarene 74--Rod Scheuerman scored 18 points and had nine rebounds for SCC. The Vanguards (15-9, 4-2) limited Point Loma Nazarene to 41% shooting from the field.

Concordia 86, Cal Baptist 80--Kalim Scott scored 17 points and had 14 rebounds to lead host Concordia (12-11, 3-3). Josh Giles scored 20 points and Joey Busch had 18 points for the Eagles.

Richard Hurt scored 22 points and had seven rebounds for Cal Baptist (9-12, 1-5).

In Golden State Athletic Conference women’s basketball:

Concordia 80, Cal Baptist 62--Kristin Weddick scored 15 points and had seven rebounds for Concordia. Teammate Jaime Gast scored 14 points and had six rebounds and Angela Good had 13 points for the Eagles (17-5, 4-1).

Southern California College 81, Point Loma Nazarene 58--Elaine Whittemore scored 21 points on nine-of-15 shooting from the field and grabbed 18 rebounds to lead host SCC. Kristi Wright added 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Vanguards (19-4, 6-0).

In nonconference baseball:

Southern California College 4-7, San Francisco State 2-2--Matt Littlefield had a hit and two runs batted in for visiting SCC in the second game of the doubleheader. Joseph Rivera struck out seven batters in 4 2/3 innings for the victory.

In the first game, the Vanguards (2-0) came from behind, scoring two runs in the top of the seventh for a 4-2 victory. Joshua Steele (1-0) pitched four innings in relief to pick up the victory.

In Big West Conference men’s tennis:

UC Irvine 4, Pacific 2--Thomas Bohun, No. 1 singles player for host UC Irvine, defeated Pacific’s Alex Fielder, 7-6, 4-6, 6-3. The Anteaters (3-1) also received singles victories from Nick Varvais, Brett Lucas and David Chang. The doubles matches were rained out.

In Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men’s volleyball :

Pepperdine 3, UC Irvine 0--Pepperdine’s George Roumain had 21 kills in the 15-8, 15-9, 15-6 victory. Chris Jacobson added 16 kills for the Waves (4-1, 3-1).

Cory Weber had 15 kills for UC Irvine (4-2, 1-2). Kevin Dake had 34 assists for the Anteaters.
