Austrians posted the four fastest times during the first men’s downhill training run Thursday, then complained the course was not fast enough.

Werner Franz, who has not even secured a spot on the Austrian team for Sunday’s downhill, had the best time of 1 minute, 52.80 seconds on the first of three training runs. Stefan Eberharter was second in 1:52.97.

Hermann Maier, who has won 10 World Cup events this season and is the downhill favorite, was third in 1:53.27. But he said the course is too slow for his aggressive style.

“For me, it’s not so good. It’s too flat for me,” he said.

Belgium’s Jacques Rogge was the victor in a hotly contested election for a spot on the IOC’s executive board, stepping in line for a possible run to succeed President Juan Antonio Samaranch.

Rogge, a former Olympic sailor, prevailed over three other candidates: former judo gold medalist Anton Geesink of the Netherlands; Mexico’s Olegario Vazquez Rana, president of the international shooting federation; and Peruvian IOC member Ivan Dibos.
