Speedskater Eric Flaim, a silver medalist in long- and short-track racing, will carry the U.S. flag at the head of the American team in Saturday’s (Friday, Pacific time) opening ceremony. Flaim, of Boston, was elected flag bearer by the eight U.S. team captains.

Flaim finished second in the 1,500 meters in 1988 in Calgary, then switched to short track for the 1992 Games in Albertville, France, and won another silver on the men’s 5,000-meter relay team at Lillehammer, Norway, four years ago.

Flaim retired after the Lillehammer Games but returned to the sport last year and will skate on the 5,000 relay team again.
