A backer of a proposed floating U.S. heliport off the coast of Okinawa narrowly won a mayoral election. Takeo Kishimoto, who was endorsed by Prime Minister Ryutaro Hashimoto, told voters in Nago that the heliport would help the depressed local economy. The election, with turnout at 82%, was held two days after Okinawa Gov. Masahide Ota announced that he would not support government efforts to build the floating platform.
