Only Nightfall Can Stop Oxnard, 14-0

Cory Cloud and Carlos Morales combined on a three-hitter for Oxnard College in a 14-0 victory over Rio Hondo in an Oxnard tournament baseball game Friday called after eight innings because of darkness.

Cloud pitched the first two innings, allowing one hit and striking out one. Morales (1-0) allowed two hits and struck out five.

Oxnard shortstop Jack Wilson drove in five runs with a three-run triple and a single, and third baseman Brent Egan went four for four, including a double and a run-scoring triple, and scored four runs.

Kevin Mellinger added a run-scoring double and a triple.

Glendale 9, El Camino 8--Jesse Mitchell, John Campanella and Alex Stencel each had three hits in the Vaqueros’ Oxnard tournament victory.

Campanella, a transfer from Cal Poly San Louis Obispo who attended Crespi High, had two doubles for Glendale (4-3).

Ventura 6, Rio Hondo 3--Andy Super (1-0) pitched a five-hitter for the Pirates, despite allowing two home runs, striking out four and walking one in the Oxnard tournament.

Doug Smith and Chris Cicuto each had two hits and scored two runs for Ventura.

El Camino 16, Ventura 6--Andy Super hit a solo home run and hit a sacrifice fly, but the Pirates (1-3) were routed in the Oxnard tournament.

Canyons 14, Cypress 2--David Soto drove in five runs with three hits and Chris Baker (2-0) struck out eight in eight innings for the Cougars in the Cy-Coast tournament at Cypress.

Baker allowed two runs (one earned) and eight hits.

Jesse Daggett had two doubles and a run-scoring single, and Nick Katzenstein scored five runs and drove in two with two hits for Canyons (6-0).

Cerritos 10, Valley 2--Steve Guerrero had two hits for the Monarchs, who lost in the Casey Stengel tournament at Cerritos College.

Harbor 11, Valley 4--Steve Guerrero hit a three-run home run and Sigi Arroyo had two hits for the Monarchs (1-6) in the Casey Stengel tournament at Cerritos College.

Cal Lutheran 10, Whittier 8--Jake Ganajian’s three-run home run in the sixth inning gave the Kingsmen a 10-4 lead in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game at Whittier.

Ganajian had three hits and four runs batted in for Cal Lutheran (1-1, 1-0 in SCIAC play).

Nate Nelson went four for four for Whittier (0-3, 0-1), including a solo home run.
