ALL FOR ONE AND ONE FOR THE ROAD

One crowd-pleaser deserved another Saturday night at the men’s figure skating competition, and for once, the judges came through, rightly awarding Philippe Candeloro of France the bronze medal after his dashing portrayal of D’Artagnan the musketeer.

Candeloro, who turns 26 Tuesday, called the medal “a good birthday present”--and it will probably serve as a retirement gift as well. Candeloro said he doubted he would skate at the World Figure Skating Championships in Minneapolis in late March, giving up his Olympic-eligible status to take his swashbuckling show onto the professional circuit.

“I need a vacation,” Candeloro said. “I am old now--25, 26 in three days . . . I am tired of practicing. I want to turn pro and have good fun touring as a professional.”

And if ever a character was ready-made for Stars On Ice, it is Candeloro’s roof-raising D’Artagnan, coming soon to a hockey rink near you.
