17 New Recruits Join Retired Senior Police Program
For the first time in two years, the Police Department welcomed new members to its Retired Senior Volunteer Program, which helps complement the work of full-time police officers.
The 17 new volunteers began a six-week training program last week. Their duties will include working at substations, issuing parking citations and performing other nonenforcement tasks, Senior Officer Mike Kelly said.
The recruits join a corps of 46. No new recruits were needed until recently because there is little turnover, Kelly said.
“They are pretty special,” Kelly said. “They contribute a lot to the department and help save the city money.”
The volunteers are expected to volunteer six hours a week once they pass the training program.
