Bombing Iraq
In “U.N. Leader Seeks Way Out of Iraq Crisis” (Feb. 12), you quote a diplomat who believes Hussein is ready to absorb an attack because it will turn him into a martyr in the eyes of the Arab world, as saying, “When it’s all over he’s going to come out of his hole, thumb his nose at the U.S. and go back to making his chemical weapons.”
Isn’t it probable that if we don’t attack Iraq, Saddam Hussein’s reaction would be more than thumbing his nose at us, it would be open derision at our empty threats and a continued buildup of weapons? Isn’t it also possible that an attack could successfully find its targets and that the Iraqis could turn against Hussein?
