Computers to Be Donated to Schools

Share

Local schools that want free computers should get their requests ready.

The Ventura County superintendent of schools office will begin giving away 300 to 400 used Apple MacIntoshes on Jan. 15.

Interested principals from public elementary, middle and high schools should call Linda Martinez at the Regional Occupational Program--the county schools’ vocational training division--at 388-4430 for more information.

The hundreds of used computers, modems, CD-ROMs and printers were donated by Thousand Oaks-based biotechnology company Amgen Inc. and a few other businesses that prefer to remain anonymous.

“This equipment will allow students of all ages access to technology that might not be available otherwise,” said Sharon Dixon, a computer teacher who spearheads the Computer for Kids Program, which is in its third year. “It also allows local businesses and industry to recycle their technology to the community--technology that might otherwise be wasted.”

Last year, 58 schools received about 300 computers from Amgen, which helped about 5,000 students as part of the computer giveaway program. Only 10 schools participated in 1995, the program’s first year.
