Attorney Costs for Raabe Approved
County supervisors have agreed to pay another $15,000 to an attorney already being paid$1 million for defending convicted former county Assistant Treasurer Matthew Raabe.
Defense attorney Gary M. Pohlson agreed to limit his fees for representing Raabe when he is deposed in connection with the damage suit the county has filed against Merrill Lynch & Co., one of the Wall Street firms the county blames for its 1994 bankruptcy.
Supervisor Todd Spitzer said Raabe is booked for 11 days of depositions in connection with the county’s civil case against Merrill Lynch. Pohlson also will be paid expenses.
Raabe was convicted of multiple felonies for his role in diverting interest that belonged to other government bodies that had money in the county’s ill-fated investment pool.
“The only reason I can support this today is that Mr. Raabe’s testimony, pro or con, needs to be known before going to trial,” Spitzer said.
“This action today helps protect the county’s litigation interests.”
