Hazardous Waste Collection Planned

The city will collect household hazardous waste during a three-day visit to Van Nuys next week.

The city’s Hazmobile will be stationed from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. for three days, beginning Thursday, at the Anheuser Busch Brewery parking lot on the northeast corner of Roscoe Boulevard and Woodley Avenue.

Household hazardous waste includes pesticides, cleansers, motor oil and paint as well as other common household chemicals labeled toxic, flammable, corrosive, irritant or poisonous, according to the county Department of Public Works.

If improperly stored or illegally disposed of through regular trash, sewers and storm drains, these chemicals can become fire, health and environmental hazards.

All waste should be brought in safe containers, said a department spokesman.

The Hazmobile is part of the countywide household hazardous waste collection program and is co-sponsored by the public works department.

The drive-thru collection program is a free service for Los Angeles residents. Although not required, residents are encouraged to make reservations for their waste drop-off.

Reservations may be made by calling the Household Hazardous Waste Hotline at (800) 998-6942 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
