Woman Admits to $1-Million Theft From Goodwill

A woman accused of being the head of a family ring that embezzled more than $1 million in cash and goods from Goodwill Industries has pleaded guilty to conspiracy and grand theft.

Linda Faye Marcil, 43, was the sixth of seven family members to admit to charges that they stole from the charitable organization over 15 years. The five others who have pleaded to identical charges are Marcil’s three sisters, her brother and a nephew.

The seventh family member is Marcil’s brother-in-law, Jeffrey Marcil. He disclosed the scam to authorities during a divorce dispute, but prosecutor Steven Lowney said no deals were made with any of the defendants.

Officers seized more than $425,000 in cash, more than $1 million in bank accounts, six homes, 16 cars, 25 guns and records that allegedly detail distribution of stolen funds from the suspects.

Sentencing for Marcil was set for February 27.

An eighth suspect, former Goodwill General Manager Carol Marrs, shot and killed herself last year after her house was searched by law enforcement agents.
