False Complaints

What the ACLU and other police watchdog groups fail to realize is that the number of false complaints against police officers is on the rise (Jan. 18). If police officers have no recourse or way to defend themselves, then certain rude, vindictive and otherwise uncooperative citizens will continue to file false complaints.

To say this law will prevent citizens from filing complaints is ludicrous. Many Southland law enforcement agencies have a complaint process in place that’s unparalleled in history. What’s not being discussed is the effect a false complaint has on an officer’s record. This same record is used for promotional and specialized unit assignments. If this law is repealed, then an otherwise good police officer could potentially have his career railroaded by a lie.

If you ask me, I think the ACLU’s challenge to this law represents the height of hypocrisy.
