A former governor has been jailed for his ties to known drug lords, the Mexican attorney general’s office said.

Former Jalisco state governor Flavio Romero de Velasco traveled through Europe and Africa with known drug traffickers from whom he accepted gifts, the office said in a statement late Saturday.

Justice officials jailed Romero de Velasco on Saturday after uncovering financial records that tie him to drug traffickers Gaxiola and Jorge Abrego Reyna, the office said.

Meanwhile, in another blow to Mexico’s army, a retired general was arrested for allegedly trying to arrange a pact between Mexico’s two largest drug cartels.

The case against former Gen. Jorge Maldonado Vega, who was arrested Saturday, marks the fourth time a retired or active-duty general has been charged with drug trafficking in the last year.

“The arrangement . . . would have allowed Amado Carrillo Fuentes’ operation to operate without persecution . . . and arrive at an agreement with the Arellano Felix organization to avoid killings between the gangs,” the attorney general’s office said.

Carrillo died after plastic surgery in July.
